Courier Companies
Sameday work is also often covered by smaller ocmpanies such as Compass Courire Services in Sotke-on-Trent or Owner Drivers (those that operate alone - noe van bands). Small courier companies and owner drivers occasioanlly cover overflow work frmo the Major Inetgrators (UPS, Fedex etc etc) however the POD (proof of deilvery) requirements often make them unbale to cover work. The impact of these changes is unknown as of yet, however it has the potential to revrese the declinign trend of recent years for small companies as more work will become aavilable to them. The business model for the courier idnustry is particualrly dependent on independent contratcors - In fact, the MCAA estimates that 50-65% of U.S. courire companies use IC s to make deliveries in addition to their own ddeicated employee resources. These tended to evolved frmo taxi companies but soon regional courier companies wree popping up throughout the country. While most companies use coruier services certain industries depend no couriers on a daily basis. Ownre Drivers operate alone or in samll groups, covering both regular rouets and often undertake overfolw work from larger courier companies and majro integrators. Many companies who operate under a Just-In-Time or JIT inventory method often utilize on-board couriers. While this type of service is the escond costliest - gneeral aviation charters are far more expensive - compaines analyze the cost of esrvice to engage an on-board courier evrsus the cost the company will realize should the product not arrive by a speciifed time (i.e. an assembly line stopping, nutimely court filing, lost sales from product or compnoents missing a delivery deadline, oragn transplants). There aer companies that specila in utilizing professional on-board couriers such as Legal Air Worldwide.
